Community Updates 1.11.21

Greetings, HAAF family. We would like to share with you the following information.

1) The Men's Cancer Network, Inc. will be hosting its first Brother's Cancer Support Group Meeting of 2022 at January 22, 10am-12pm PT. This group meeting will focus on the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), mental health, and hands-on caregiving from guest speakers Rev. Dr. Rosy Medina, Ms. Alejandra Ramos, and Mrs. Andrea Marlin. Registration is now open, and you may register in advance through the following link. You will receive an email with additional details after registration.

2) The Community Coalition of South LA will be hosting its first Prevention Network meeting of the year on Jan. 18, 10-11:30am. The Prevention Network is an alliance of social service providers and community residents fighting to increase access to prevention and treatment services in South L.A. and end mass incarceration. The Prevention Network continues to direct policy initiatives and resource distribution according to the real human needs they see and address on a daily basis. And network members remain at the forefront of the movement to increase the state’s investment in programs that help families and local neighborhoods thrive. 3) CORE Los Angeles has released a list of locations that will provide free COVID-19 testing for the month of January. No ID or insurance required. For more information, please click on the following link. They are working as fast as possible to get walk ups registered but they cannot guarantee all walkups will be seen. That said, they encourage you to make an appointment ahead of time and show up 30 minutes before your appointment. They will also be updating any details as they become available.

4) Check out the newly launched S.L.A.M Prevention Coalition website featuring education, outreach, and resources that increase awareness and help to reduce underage use of marijuana, tobacco, alcohol, and prescription drugs. Formerly known as the SPA 6 Coalition, The South Los Angeles Movement (S.L.A.M.) Prevention Coalition is a collaborative of South Los Angeles community-based organizations that provide prevention education, outreach, and resources that increase awareness and help to reduce underage use of marijuana, tobacco, alcohol, and prescription drugs. 5) The Wall Las Memorias Project will be providing client-centered HIV testing services to populations at risk for HIV in Los Angeles. Walk-ins are welcomed, and services will be provided in Boyle Heights and Downtown LA. For questions or help setting up an appointment, please call 323-257-1056.

The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) is dedicated to serving Latino, LGBTQ, and other under-served populations.TWLM serves low-income and hard-to-reach communities throughout Los Angeles educating community members on the importance of HIV and AIDS, substance abuse prevention, mental health stigma reduction for LGBTQI2-S transitional-aged youth (TAY), transgender women health and wellness, non-binary health and wellness, and community building in the marginalized communities. 6) The American Red Cross is currently seeking a full-time General Maintenance Technician II to work in their Los Angeles, CA location. The position is 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (40 hours/week with great benefits and paid time off. The prospect would, under general supervision, perform repairs and maintenance in plant or office facilities, or on machines and equipment, conduct routine, periodic, or special inspections to determine repair and maintenance work necessary to prevent breakdowns of facilities, machinery, and equipment, provide support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers, and other responsibilities. Community Updates 1.10.21


1) Due to the ongoing rise of COVID cases in the Los Angeles community, the MLK Healing Center's parenting workshop will take place virtually this evening as opposed to in-person. From Trauma to Triumph is a 5-week parenting workshop where parents can connect with each other in storytelling & healing practices to learn new ways to reparent themselves and their children to be liberated and free. The workshop will take place Mondays from 6-7pm on the following days: Jan. 10 (today), Jan. 24, Feb. 7, Feb. 21, and Mar. 7. 2) The LA County Department of Health Services is launching anew program designed to increase and facilitate access to COVID-19 tests for LA County residents unable to obtain appointments. The program will allow residents to pick up a PCR test kit, perform the test, and return the completed kit to designated locations for processing. Residents will be notified of their test results within 24-48 hours.

The “Pick-Up Testing Kit” program is the latest in a series of LA County efforts designed to expand testing capacity as demand grows across the county. It will operate at 13 testing sites across LA County. “Pick-Up Test Kits” will be available without an appointment and until daily supplies are exhausted. The “Pick-Up Testing Kits” will test for both COVID-19 and Influenza (A and B), the same as all LA County operated testing locations.

3) Journey Out and the FBI will be hosting its 2022 Summit on sex trafficking prevention. This three-day event will equip audiences with strategies, tools, and resources to empower themselves, with the content being uniquely tailored for the following demographics, starting tomorrow:

  • Jan. 11: Parents

  • Jan. 12: Youth

  • Jan. 13: Community Members

This summit will take place on these days from 5-7pm PST.

MOMtastic Day

LADA Lotta Love is hosting their 7th MOMtastic Day, honoring mothers of children who have autism and special needs on May 8th. It is a virtual, family friendly, comedy and jazz show, and is open to all mothers, caregivers, grandmothers, and all supporting persons that care and love their families living with autism or special needs everyday. Autism Awareness month

April is Autism Awareness Month!

SPHARC will be hosting a series of four coffee talks every Wednesday in April. Each coffee talk will feature guest speakers and have dedicated time for questions & answers with autistic individuals. The coffee talk series will cover a variety of topics across the lifespan related to autism including:

  • Reaching Families Through Telemedicine

  • Girls on the Spectrum

  • Employment & Transition

  • Celebrating Neurodiversity
